It was now 9:55 am on Wednesday, August 17, and the daily email was due by 10 am or it wouldn’t make the cutoff.
Type, type, click, click, send. Off it went. Seconds later, I received notification that the email to our camper had been received by camp. And that, well that, that was it. The final email letter of the summer. Our tenth summer. Yes, after writing somewhere over 400 letters and emails over the course of ten years, we had arrived at the end of this summer.
And we were wistful about it. Reflecting on our daily reports, amusing perspectives, supportive thoughts, funny – no, hysterical – letters, clever quips, SAT questions, jokes and so much more. Thinking about the deeper bond that we forged each and every time we wrote a letter. An enduring connection filled with memories. But mostly, we thought about the love that has gone into each and every letter we wrote, no matter how long or short, how newsy or fictional, how funny or serious. Love for our kids. That’s what it’s all about. Nothing more and nothing less. Love.
