Write with Intention

Your letters to camp can have a big impact on your child. Take the time to consider what you want to achieve so you can help your child to thrive at overnight camp.

It’s easy to begin with the latest goings-on at home or a few questions about what your child has been doing at camp. But how helpful is this approach to your camper?

Instead, I encourage you to write with intention. Be deliberate and thoughtful. Consider what you want to achieve with your letter—it’s easier than you may think.

You may have already talked with your camper about their goals for the summer—perhaps achieving a Red Cross swimming level or participating in the camp musical. Based on that, think about what you want to achieve with your letter, such as (this is not a complete list):

  1. Building confidence – Help your camper feel good about themselves and their camp experience
  2. Reducing homesickness – Avoid topics that might make them wish they were home instead of at camp
  3. Sharing relevant updates – For kids who follow sports, provide scores and highlights they’ll enjoy
  4. Encouraging their goals – Offer specific support for what they’re working toward this summer

Each child is unique, with their own interests, opportunities, and growth areas. Tailor your letter to your particular camper. For example, while I generally discourage too much talk about home, if your child is thriving at camp, they may enjoy hearing what’s happening at home without experiencing FOMO—it all depends on the individual.

When you write with intention, you help your camper have their very best summer. Happy writing!
